Machining involves the precise shaping of workpieces into desired geometrical forms by removing excess material, based on technical drawings and industry standards. This material removal process relies on specialized cutting tools and machining centers to achieve accuracy and efficiency.
The machining process encompasses various techniques, including turning, milling, planing, shaping, grinding, and honing, each serving distinct purposes in manufacturing.
During machining, the application of force to the cutting tool against the workpiece initiates stress, resulting in elastic and plastic deformations. Once the stress exceeds the material’s breaking point, a layer of material, known as a chip, is separated from the workpiece.
Several factors influence the machining process, including cutting tool lifespan, cutting speed, chip thickness, depth of cut, rake angles, vibration, coolant usage, and the materials of both the tool and workpiece.
